A standard side gate hung on a new frame is £280 to £480 fitted, a made-to-measure gate for an awkward opening is £380 to £700 and rehanging an existing gate that has dropped is £90 to £170. Every price includes the hinges, latch and any lock, fitted and adjusted.
The side return gate is the one most people ring about, and it is nearly always a bespoke width. London side returns were built to whatever the gap between the houses happened to be, so a stock gate from a shed catalogue will either be too narrow and leave a gap a dog can get through, or too wide and need trimming until it looks wrong. We measure the opening and build to it.
The second thing people get wrong is the ironmongery. A heavy timber gate on three cheap butt hinges will drop within a season. It needs proper hook and band hinges or heavy tee hinges, bolted through rather than screwed, and a post that is actually set in the ground rather than fixed to a fence panel.
Get those two right and a gate lasts fifteen years. Get them wrong and you are calling someone out every spring.

How we fit a gate
On uneven ground the trick is the clearance at the bottom. Too tight and the gate catches as soon as the ground moves. Too loose and you have a gap. We set it against the highest point of the swing so it clears all year.
What makes a gate last
- A post in the ground. A gate post carries the whole weight. Bolting a gate to a fence panel is why it drops.
- The right hinges. Hook and band or heavy tee hinges, bolted through the frame, not screwed into the end grain.
- A gap at the bottom. Timber sitting on wet paving wicks water and rots from the foot up.
- Treated end grain. Every cut we make gets treated before it goes in. It is the bit everyone skips.
